Heat Exchangers and Their Types - Tube, Shell, Regenerative and Plate Heat Exchangers

There is not a lot of public knowledge about heat exchangers; they are generally only discussed in mechanical and chemical engineers circles. Yet they are found all over the world in common appliances like air conditioners and refrigerators, the radiator in motor vehicles is an another example.
The basic principle behind heat exchangers is the transferring of heat from one medium to another. For example the car radiator allows hot fluid from the engine to be cooled when the fins of the radiator radiate the heat into the air that flows over its surface. Some factors that influence the efficiency of heat exchangers are the fluids rate of flow and the total surface area of the wall that separates the fluids. To increase the surface area of the contact wall fins and corrugations are added, this is an effective measure.
Of The 4 types of heat exchanger the shell and tube configuration is most common and also relatively easy to maintain. This system has multiple tubes with fluid running inside them and simultaneously running over them. This allows a heat transfer to take place.
Another one is regenerative type that is common in gas cooling applications has the effect of taking heat produced in one process and transferring it to another also known as heat recovery. Plate and intermediate fluid exchangers are the other types.
The plate configuration uses the same technique as the shell and tube just here the fluid is made to flow through layers of cavities between multiple plates the result is a large surface area. This configuration is considered to have the best thermodynamic performance for this application and it is widespread in the engineering world. But it is more time consuming and labour intensive to fabricate than a shell tube heat exchanger.
The way the fluid flows through the these equipments has been divided into 3 major groups. These flow arrangements are cross-flow, counter-flow and parallel-flow. Of these the counter-flow configuration transfers the greatest amount of heat.

Practical Information on Shell and Tube Heat Exchangers

Shell and tube heat exchangers can be used in a variety of industries for a number of purposes.  The heat exchanger's composition consists of a number of tubes.  Some of the tubes contain fluid that is heated or cooled depending on a particular job.  A second set of tubes manipulate the first so the exchanger can either give or absorb heat.  Shell and tube heat exchangers are usually implemented in high-pressure endeavors.
Heat exchangers are usually composed of fluoropolymers.  Fluoropolymers such as PTFE, PFA, FEP, and PVDF are used in a variety of jobs due to their versatile and tenacious nature.
Those in the market for shell and tube heat exchangers need to take a few elements into account before making a purchase.  Consider the following:
-    The diameter of the tubing can be manipulated by the provider.  A main point to consider is the nature of the particular fluids used in the tubes.  Smaller-sized tubes will warrant faster cleaning, yet bigger tubes may be less economical and less compact regarding space.
-    The thickness of tubes relates to several factors.  Corrosion, flow resistance, axial strength, pressure, and availability of spare parts relates to a heat exchanger's tube thickness.
-    Heat exchanger cost is influenced by shell diameter and tube length.  Clients who are concerned about cost ask for exchangers which provide the longest tube length without compromising its efficiency.  The possibility for long tubes may be limited due to space, specific job specifications, and replacement possibilities.
-    Corrugation of tubes influences performance.  Corrugated, inner tubes allow for increased turbulence of fluids, in turn delivering better performance.
-    'Tube layout' refers to how a heat exchanger's tubes are positioned within the shell.  To date, there are four, main layouts to consider:  triangular, rotated triangular, square, and rotated square.  Triangular tubing facilitates better heat transfer while square tubing allows for a longer period of cleanliness.
-    'Tube pitch' refers to the distance between centers of individual but connected tubes.  A general rule states a tube's pitch should not be less than 1.25 times the tube's outer diameter.
-    'Baffles' are used in shell and tube heat exchangers to direct fluid flow across the tube bundle.  Baffles prevent the tubes from sagging, and can also prevent them from vibrating.  Baffle spacing is important in regards to pressure drop and heat transfer.  Baffles spaced closely causes a greater pressure drop, yet placed too far apart may cause cooler spots between them.

Why Is Pipe Marking Important In Every Industrial Business

In an industrial setup, pipe systems are very common. They are used in production processes. And because of this, they usually carry harmful substances and toxic chemicals that may be a risk to the workers' health. Since there are a lot of accidents that can happen in an industrial work place, the use of labels and warnings signs is very important. It is recommended by many health and safety practitioners to avoid serious sickness and illnesses.

Labeling a danger zone or putting warning signs on pipes can greatly reduce the risks of workers getting injuries while working. Pipe marking is an effective way to remind workers of the dangers of the place if they are not careful with their actions. Warning labels should be placed in an area where many people can see and they should be either in bold letters in a very bright shade for them be get easily noticed.

In addition, since pipe marking labels are not actually as simple as sticker labels, it is recommended for a business to have at least their own label printer. Marking labels for pipes are designed and manufactured specifically to withstand external elements like sun exposure. They may also be made according to existing national standards for piping identification and are also specific to above-ground piping systems and color schemes. They may also be applied to designate flammable fluids with compressed air. They are usually printed in neon colors so the workers can instantly recognize pipe contents even from afar.

Choosing manufacturers of pipe markers that specialize in industrial-grade markers is important as well. This ensures quality made markers that are resistant to high temperatures, UV exposure, and even chemicals. As an economical option to relying on established manufacturers, you could invest in a label maker so you're able to have the ease and expediency of printing your own pipe markers, when you need them.

Another important thing about pipe markers is that they need to be customized according to the diameter of the pipe. The height of the text and the length of the marker need to effectively communicate the markings of facilities. It can't be too small or too large that it prevents workers from identifying pipe contents. Pipe markers do more than just identify pipe contents. They keep facilities safe, eliminating potential errors. They save time and money through reduced maintenance and downtime. They help facilities comply with occupational health and safety standards.

Understanding Heat Exchangers

http://youtu.be/w32T6pBV27g

Heat exchangers are devices that are specifically designed to be able to efficiently transfer heat from one fluid to another through a solid surface. This heat transfer takes one of two forms namely dissipation of heat or absorption. These two fluids should never come into contact with each other. They are found in everyday applications that include furnaces, air conditioning systems, domestic hot water systems, pool heaters, radiant floor heating, ground water systems, refrigerators and boilers.

Other applications of them include petroleum refineries, sewage treatment, space heating, power plants, natural gas processing, chemical plants and petrochemical plants. They are also known to be energy savers as they recover wasted heat and make it useful again. They come in different types and these are distinguished based on which direction the liquid will be flowing. This will include cross flow, parallel flow and counter-current heat exchangers. Parallel flow heat exchangers are designed in a way that all the fluids will be flowing on the same direction by entering and exiting the exchanger side by side.

The cross flow models are designed in a way that the fluid paths are running perpendicular to each other. The counter-current models are designed in a way that the fluid paths are flowing in opposite directions where one exists where the other is entering. They are more effective compared to the others. Heat exchangers are not classified according to their fluid direction only. They can also be classified according to their composition. Some of them are made of several tubes while others have hot plates that have room for the flow of liquid between them.

A Shell and tube exchanger is designed with several tubes which are divided into two sets where one contains the liquid for cooling or heating and the other contains the liquid that triggers the exchange. This type of exchanger should be well designed especially the diameter of the tube and the thickness of the wall in order to allow optimum heat exchange. A plate exchanger has thin plates that are joined together with small spaces between them. These exchangers have large surface areas.

Regenerative heat exchanger is another type of exchanger and this works when a fluid is passed on the two sides of the exchanger. This fluid can get very hot and this will mean that the exiting fluid will be used for warming the incoming fluid which will maintain a near constant temperature. Another type of exchanger is the Adiabatic wheel heat exchanger where an intermediate fluid is used for storing heat and is then transferred to the exchangers opposite side. This exchanger has a large wheel that has threads for rotating through the fluids to transfer heat.

Heat Exchanger and Tube Bundle Cleaning

Heat exchanger tube cleaning and general maintenance is a necessary part of keeping a system in good working order. Heat exchangers are to be found in a number of industries, notably in oil refineries and the chemical industry. Their function is to transfer heat from one source to another; usually from one liquid to another liquid. Water jetting is the most common method used for heat exchanger tube cleaning. This entails ultra high pressure water jets being directed on to the scale in order to remove it. Automated system can perform water jetting remotely, thereby ensuring the maximum safety for operators.

The two liquids are not usually in contact with each other, but have a wall of high thermal conductivity between them. In the oil industry the most common type of heat exchanger is the shell and tube design. This design entails a large circular metal pipe construction, the shell that has a bundle of tubes contained inside.

The heat exchange takes place when one liquid is introduced into the shell and another is introduced into the tubes. The two liquids are at different temperatures and heat is exchanged between them, usually for the purpose of cooling one of the liquids down.

The shell & tube design of heat exchanger is a complex one. Cleaning it may seem a daunting task, but it is actually achieved more easily than might be imagined. Heat exchanger tube cleaning is necessary for several reasons. It is required, for example, prior to an inspection of a heat exchanger tube bundle, especially if the tube bundle is made of metal.

An inspection of a tube bundle is carried out by use of an Internal Rotary Inspection System. This involves introducing a probe that has a rotating mirror that can direct an ultrasonic beam onto the wall of the tubes to measure any pitting or corrosion. The mirror is rotated by a small turbine that is driven by the pressure of water that is introduced into the tubes. The probe is drawn along the tube slowly to provide a continuous chart record of the tube's internal condition.

During normal operation the inside of the tube bundle can become badly scaled. This has a dramatic effect on the efficiency of the unit, greatly reducing its ability to function at maximum capacity. For this reason it then becomes necessary for tube cleaning to take place in order to bring the unit back up to standard.

Water jetting is the most common method used for heat exchanger tube cleaning. This entails ultra high pressure water jets being directed on to the scale in order to remove it. Automated system can perform water jetting remotely, thereby ensuring the maximum safety for operators.

De-scaling cleaning operations are usually performed on site, which means that the heat exchanger and its tube bundles do not have to be removed. This helps to ensure a minimum of time is spent when the heat exchanger can not be in use.

Best Fin Fan Cooler Manufacturer in India - Enginemates Heat Transfer Pvt Ltd

A fin fan cooler is a term used to refer to an aerial cooler. I believe at one time a specific manufacturer called their coolers "Fin-Fans" and the term later came to be a reference to any aerial cooler. Much the same was as electric refrigerators were all referred to as Frigidaire's or copies are referred to as XEROX's.

This type of aerial cooler is used a great deal in refinery and petro chemical plants. The construction usually consists of two metal rectangular boxes with drilled holes to accept hollow tubes that have aluminum fins attached to them.

For those familiar with a car radiator, the concept is the same. The difference is Fin Fan Cooler Manufacturer construction needs to be more robust because the pressure contained by the coolers is usually much higher than that of a car radiator.

The two boxes (called headers) with the interconnecting tubes are housed in a light metal plenum that directs air from one or more fans over the finned tubes to achieve the desired cooling.

This is a simplified description of an aerial cooler. There are many details regarding fabrication, configuration, materials, fan design etc. that I have left out.

Air coolers are twice as expensive to purchase and install as water coolers. The great advantage of an air cooler is that it does not need cooling water. The difficult aspect of air cooling arises from the flow of air across the tubes.

Most air coolers are either induced-draft or forced-draft, the more common arrangement being forced draft. The air is moved by rather large fans. The tubes are surrounded with foil-type fins, typically 1 in high. The surface area of the fins as compared to the surface area of the tubes is typically 12 to 1. That is why we call an air cooler an extended-surface heat exchanger.

The heat-transfer coefficient of an air cooler Aluminum Radiator (Btu, per hour, per square foot of finned area, per degree Fahrenheit) is not particularly good. It might be 3 to 4 for cooling a viscous liquid, or 10 to 12 for condensing a clean vapor. The low heat-transfer coefficients are offset by the large extended surface area.

In a forced-draft air cooler, cool air is blown through the underside of the fin tube bundle. In an induced-draft air cooler, cool air is drawn through the underside of the fin tubes. Either way, road dust, dead moths, catalyst fines, and greasy dirt accumulate along the lower row of tubes. As the tubes foul, they offer more resistance to the airflow.

Cool Away Your Summer Woes With Air Coolers

Air cooling is a method through which heat is mitigated by several degrees, as a result of which the air surrounding the object, becomes cool. With global warming and sweaty nights being a common occurrence these days, having an air cooler at home has become more of a necessity than a luxury. It is essential to note that these are very different from air conditioners and both their working mechanisms are significantly different. Not only it easy on the pocket, they are also portable in nature and they can be moved to different rooms during the uneasy summer months.

Before purchasing it, you must make sure that you absolutely need one, considering your area's climatic condition. While air conditioners are generally priced high and are not easily installed, air conditioners offer a lot of advantages. While air conditioners dry out the room completely by wicking away moisture completely, it merely cool the air and are thus, better. Most air coolers work on a mechanism where you will need to fill water up in the tank, and the device uses this water to cool the air around it. Plus, the air that is released from the air cooler is not icy cold, but pleasantly cool.

This is extremely beneficial for people who prefer moderation in temperature. For people who live in dry areas where there is a lack of humidity, an air cooler is a solid bet and a reliable investment. It is a relatively simple device, specifically because of its build and its design mechanism. Plus, it is simpler to clean it due to its structure and its noise level is significantly lower. Moreover, if you are concerned about power consumption, an air cooler is a worry-free affair as it consumes much less power as compared to an air conditioner. These are classified into two different kinds - portable and window mounted.

Portable air cooler information

1. Considering a portable air cooler can be utilized exclusively within places that are very hot and also dry, they're less effective around areas that have a humid climate. Humid weather carries a adverse effect within the working of these coolers as water won't evaporate rapidly and ample cool air isn't produced.

In addition, these kinds of units need a consistent supply of fresh water that might be a issue within a dry region.

2. Portable air coolers, often known as Swamp coolers are practical units for those who seeking to cool their own households. They are perfect around areas where the weather conditions will be warm and also dry. They're the ideal selection for those who are looking to cool their particular house devoid of paying a lot of money.

3. In contrast to air conditioners, evaporative air coolers need regular care and attention of homeowners. Because they will work on the theory connected with evaporation, whenever water evaporates salts and also minerals within the water will be left behind within the pads. If you don't wash your pads, they may go hard and may soak up a lesser amount of dampness.

Many more modern designs feature a timer which eliminates your salt water after aspecific quantity of given hours. Considering that salt water will be removed from the device, you don't need to endure the problem involving washing your pads.

4. A large number of home owners favor employing evaporative air coolers simply because they don't possess a detrimental impact on the particular environment. Air conditioners tend to be acknowledged to generate gases that could badly impact the ecosystem. Considering that, swamp coolers use the rules connected with evaporation they don't harm our environment.

5. Lightweight air coolers are usually preferred over air conditioners simply because they consume a smaller amount energy. Usually when you use evaporative coolers it is possible to lessen your energy intake by in excess of 33 per cent.

Nonetheless, for you to manage these types of coolers you might need a lot of water. In areas where the particular mineral content inside the water is actually high, you will require additional water in order to get rid of the particular minerals from the device.

6. Nowadays, there are numerous companies that produce transportable portable air coolers depending on the requirements of the clients. The form of the unit can vary subject to areas you intend to cool plus the space available. By way of example, if you would like cool a smallish room, you can find the 10-inch personal easily transportable air cooler.

These types of devices may be used inside your house or maybe workplace and can cool a space of approximately 800 square feet. Whenever investing in a device, be sure to access the amount of functional operation necessary. Selling prices in the unit using limited functions is generally reduced when compared to a unit that has a number of functions.

7. During summers many home owners are usually thinking of buying products that assist in maintaining their property cool. They are looking to buy solutions which are efficient in keeping the house cool with out increasing their particular energy expenditures. A lot of people are usually steering clear of the application of air-conditioners because they are generally high priced and ungainly.

Additionally, the particular operating cost connected with air-conditioners can be higher which will increase your energy expenses. To deal with the particular issue connected with substantial energy costs, many individuals are generally thinking about purchasing methods which are as powerful as air-conditioners but are energy-efficient like the portable air cooler.

From Steel Sheets to Space Shuttles an Inside Look at Pressure Vessels

Pressure vessels are described as a closed container that is fabricated to hold gases or liquids. The key feature of pressure vessels is that they are designed to hold its content at a pressure which is different from the ambient pressure. In theory they can be almost any shape. In most cases they are constructed using sections of spheres, cylinders and cones. More complex designs have been used but have come at a much higher cost and are more difficult to analyze when it comes to safety. One of the most common designs also incorporates end caps which are often called heads.
When it comes to strength spherical pressure vessels have at least twice the strength of a cylindrical pressure vessel with the same exact wall thickness. However, the downfall for using a spherical shaped design is that it is more expensive and more difficult to manufacture. With this being said most pressure vessels are cylindrical shaped using the end cap design. When it comes to smaller vessels they are usually assembled from a pipe, along with two covers.

Next we take a closer look at a pressurized water vessel. They deal with extremely high pressures so during construction safety is at a premium. They use a core container which is difficult to build but provides the most security in case of an accidental explosion. The cylinder walls are constructed from single sheets of high-strength steel that are rolled together and welded. The steel that is used can be up to 25 cm thick. The inside of these pressure vessels are also lined with stainless steel to resist corrosion. To build a pressure vessel it takes a specialized skill and specific equipment. Highly skilled welders must weld the material so it is as strong as the steel plates. This welding is vital so that the vessel remains structurally sound.
Regardless of what shape your vessel takes, the minimum mass of a vessel scales with the pressure and the overall volume. This is inversely proportional to the strength to weight ratio of the material used for construction. Simply said, minimum mass decreases as the strength increases. They are held together against the pressure from the forces inside the walls of the container. Normal stress within the walls of the container is always proportional to the radius of the vessel and inversely proportional to the overall diameter of the walls. After all of this you might be asking yourself, how and why is all of this important and how is it used? Pressure vessels are used in many different applications. Some examples include diving cylinders, distillation towers, oil refineries and even space shuttles.
