Safety Director

Summary: The HSD, under the direction of the Center Manager (Program Director and/or Clinical Nurse Manager) of the Hyperbaric Medicine Department, administers hyperbaric oxygen therapy to patients as prescribed by the Hyperbaric Physician.

•Performs duties under supervision of the Program Director, Clinical Coordinator (Nurse Manager), and/or Physician in Charge as appropriate for the facility.
•Responsible for the safe and effective operation of the hyperbaric chamber(s) and related support systems.
•Responsible for the safe delivery of hyperbaric oxygen therapy to the hyperbaric patient.

In addition to being a chamber operator, the HSD is responsible for the day-to-day maintenance on the hyperbaric chamber(s) and related support systems. The HSD will also be the point person for assessment of materials that are appropriate for use in and around hyperbaric chambers.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
•Assists in patient preparation for treatment.
•Reinforces education as it relates to hyperbaric therapy.
•Keeps complete and accurate patient records as they pertain to treatment documentation.
•Performs duties and procedures as directed by Program Director, Clinical Nurse Manager, and/or Medical Director.
•Performs hyperbaric chamber operations and system maintenance as required.
•Supports clinical hyperbaric facility accreditation as required.
•Participates in the safety program.
•Maintains competencies, continuing education and certifications as appropriate.
•Utilizing data software for wound management.
•Make appropriate entries for daily hyperbaric treatments and wound care clinic visits including photo uploading.
•Lift patient or transfer per local policy.
•Tolerate pressurization and depressurization in a hyperbaric chamber (Multiplace Only)
•Need to be able to hear patients and staff. Also, listen to equipment for malfunctions.
•In charge of all hyperbaric equipment.
•Assume responsibility for the safe and effective operation and maintenance of the hyperbaric chamber(s) and related systems and ancillary components.
•Work closely with facility management personnel and department medical personnel.
•Make the necessary recommendations for departmental safety policies and incorporate new safety procedures as appropriate.
•Serve on the hospital’s safety or environment of care committee; per the desire of the hospital.
•Have the authority to restrict or remove any potentially hazardous supply or equipment items from the chamber.
•Provide leadership and safety training to other hyperbaric facility personnel.
•Responsible for maintaining all facility safety-related standards as required by various licensing and regulatory agencies related to hyperbarics.
•Support clinical hyperbaric facility accreditation; per the desire of the hospital.
•Ensures department compliance with NFPA 99 – Hyperbaric Chapter, current edition, and with unit safety policies and procedures.
•Reviews all department safety incidents, collects information regarding equipment/patient safety, reports relevant incidents to the staff, and periodically provides in-service training related to hyperbarics.
•Fosters a positive relationship between the department and local Fire Marshall, EMS Director, and Pressure Vessel Inspector, as appropriate for a given location.
•Works closely with the Medical, Program, and Nursing Directors to develop and annually review/revise department policies and procedures and operation and maintenance documents.
•Works closely with Program Director and Healogics to coordinate and approve all hyperbaric chamber upgrades, modifications, and repairs to the hyperbaric system, including interactions with hospital maintenance personnel and outside contractors, to ensure that all maintenance activities are done in accordance with appropriate safety standards. Ensures that the testing of all modifications is performed before manned pressurization.
•Evaluates hyperbaric chamber equipment/supplies used in the chamber and ensures that they meet all safety requirements before they are permitted inside the chamber.
•Maintains a safe environment in the hyperbaric facility for patients and staff and uses approved and recognized decompression procedures for all persons with a hyperbaric exposure to inert gases.
•Informs personnel of any special work conditions such as infection control, hazard control, and confined spaces.
•Conducts quarterly hyperbaric chamber fire safety drills which are tailored to improve staff response to emergencies.
•Sets up a procedure to assist the Medical Director in reviewing and documenting safety-related events and discusses appropriate event with other to facilitate learning.

•Qualifications
•Current certification as CHT or CHS (interim status may be appointed until CHT or CHS certification is attained)
Be certified as a CHT or CHS within 1-year of stating date as HSD
•Attend an approved HBO Safety course pre or post hire, if pre hire the course completion must be within the past 5 years from date of hire
•Must have completed a Undersea & Hyperbaric Medical Society, National Board of Diving and Hyperbaric Medical Technology, Department of Defense, or American College of Hyperbaric Medicine approved hyperbaric medicine introductory course pre or post hire; if pre hire the course completion must be within the past 5 years from date of hire
•Maintains and demonstrates competency in BLS (Basic Life Support Certification), infections control, safety and all unit required skill review.
•Complete competencies skill checklist. Initial and Annually (post hire).

Requirements

  • Supervisory:
  • The incumbent in the position may or may not supervise other employees as determined by the needs of the program.
  • Education/Experience:
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
    Wound Care Center chamber operators must be a healthcare professional actively certified or licensed in one of the following vocations to meet the minimum education and experience requirements. State or Local Rules may apply.
    •Respiratory Therapist
    •Military: Corpsman or Medical Services Specialist
    •Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic
    •Registered Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse, or Licensed Vocational Nurse
    •Certified Hyperbaric Specialist
    •Certified Hyperbaric Registered Nurse
    •Certified or Registered Medical Assistant
    •Certified Hyperbaric Technologist
    •Certified Nursing Assistant
    •Certified Hyperbaric Wound Specialist
    •Physical Therapist or Physical Therapy Assistant
    •Other allied healthcare professions as approved by the NBDHMT for certification eligibility
    •Individuals who have successfully completed U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) hyperbaric training.
    •E.g.
  • U.S. Navy, Army, or Coast Guard Diver (1st Class, 2nd Class or Master Diver designation). Does not include Scuba (only) Diver
  • U.S. Air Force Aerospace Physiology Specialist
  • Chamber Operators In The State Of Ohio Must Be One Of The Following
    •Registered Nurse (RN) (Ohio licensed)
    •Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), or Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) (Ohio licensed)
    •Respiratory Therapist (Ohio licensed)
    •Certified Hyperbaric Technologist (CHT) (NBDHMT Certification)
  • Language Ability:
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

  • Computer Skills:
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, Outlook, and Word; able to navigate through internet and intranet.
    Ability to learn internal clinical outcome database, upload photographs from camera.
  • Work Environment:
  • The incumbent in this position is not required to work under any extreme condition, but may be required to work around caustic chemicals 1% of the time, and outdoor weather conditions 1% of the time; also must be able to work around a moderate noise level, such as an office environment.
  • Physical Demands:
  • The incumbent in this position typically has to stand approximately 25% of the time, walk 25% of the time, sit 50% of the time. In addition, the person is using touch or feel 95% of the time, reaches 60% of the time, and stoops, kneels, or crouches 5% of the time. This person may talk or hear 100% of the time. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds, with assistance.

  • The HSD provides a high quality and safe standard for patient care. Communicate with physicians and staff. This position is ultimately responsible for courteous, efficient customer care and safe operations of the Hyperbaric Chambers and supporting equipment.
